LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY FRIENDS THE DRAGONS

FIRST A BRIEF HISTORY
Among the oldest of mythological creatures, dragons appear in the myths and traditions of virtually all people back to the beginning of time. Because of its widespread appearances, the dragon appears in numerous forms, and many local traditions have been created around them, crediting the dragons with many attributes. In their earliest form, dragons were associated with the Great Mother- Gaia, the water god and the warrior sun god. In these capacities they had the power to be both beneficial and destructive and were all-powerful creatures in the universe.
The dragon's form arose from his particular power of control over the waters of the earth and gave rise to many of the attributes singled out by different peopleas the myth developed. They were believed to live at the bottom of the sea, where they guarded vast treasure hoards ,very frequently of pearls. Rain clouds and thunder and lightning were believed to be the dragon's breath, hence the fire-breathing monster. As the myth developed in the western world, dragons came to represent chaos. This type of dragon was considered by many to be the intermediate stage between a demon and the Devil and as such came into Christian belief. However, in the Eastern world the dragon adopted a rather different facade, benevolent, a son of heaven, who also controlled the watery elements of the universe.
The dragon is the enemy of the sun and the moon, both in Eastern and Western mythology, and is believed to be responsible for eclipses. These occur when the dragon is attempting to swallow either of the heavenly boddies; which accounts for the dragon's appearance in primitive astronomy. Because the dragon was the natural enemy of man, his death became the ultimate goal, consequently there are innumberable battles between gods and dragons, saints and dragons, and in the medieval world, knights and dragons. In Egyptian mythology there is the conflict between Horus and Typhon. In Greek legends, the dragon fought on the side of the Titans and attacked Athene, who flung him into the heavens, where he became a constellation around the Pole Star. Hercules encountered, and killed the dragon Ladon while fulfilling his eleventh labour. In Scandinavian literature, Beowulf was slain by a dragon.

Webster's Dictionary: drag.on \'drag-en\ n dracon-,draco serpent, dragon, [fr.GK drakon;akin to OE torht bright,Gk derkesthai to see, look at] 1 archaic: a huge serpent 2:a fabulous animal usually represented as a monstrous winged and scaly serpent or saurian with a crested head and enormous claws.

Here he lay, a vast red-golden dragon, fast asleep: a thrumming came form his jaws and nostrils, and whisps of smoke, but his fires were low in slumber. Beneath him, under all his limbs and his huge coiled tail, and about him on all side stretching away across the unseen floors, lay countless piles of precious things, gols wrought and unwrought, gems and jewels, and silver red stained in the bloody fight

Perhaps the dragon was not so large as the mountain; but the heavy black cloud that clung around it made it larger than a mountain, and when it forst caught sight of them it lifted its wings breifly, and the sun disappeared, and a wind like a storm wind howled around them. Then it bowed its long neck to the ground, its nose pointed toward them and its half lidded red eyes stared straight at them

Personally the crystal dragon is my favorite i happen to know a very nice one

Just at that moment, the Princess opened her eyes. She gave a small scream, and the dragon frowned.

"You don’t have to be frightened, - it said. "Really. You’re my Princess now, and I'm going to take proper care of you, and you can clean my scales and cook for me. I believe that’s the standard arrangement."

Talking to Dragons

"Her scales shone a dazzling midnight blue and her eyes glittered like newly found silver, a sight to captivate any man. The very earth seemed to be alive with her presense, the wind whispered her name and the foliage did her bidding. If only we knew how much more real the dragon seemed when she was upon us..."

--Woes of the Enemy

The enlightened man enjoys perfect freedom in active life. He is like a dragon supported by deep waters or like a tiger that commands its mountain retreat. The man who is not enlightened drifts about in the affairs of the world. He is like a ram that gets its horns caught in a fence or like a man who waits for a hare to run against a tree stump and stun itself.

Do not trifle with dragons, for you are small and crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

"Long ago, when man was young and the dragon already old, the wisest of our race took pity on man, so he gathered together all the dragons, making them vow to watch over man always. And at the moment of his death, the night became alive with those stars. And thus was born the Dragons' Heaven. But when we die, not all dragons are admitted to this shining place. No, we have to earn it! And if we don't, our spirit disappears as if we never were."

--Draco, the last of the dragons
